Newport Beach is located approximately
30 miles south of Los Angeles. Here you will find, besides the luxury
of Newport Beach hotels, that its world class fishing, surfing (one
of the first surf contests was held in here in 1928) and beaches
are some of the finest in California.
Newport Beach's pleasure craft harbor explodes with activity at
9am as the Dory Fishing Fleet (started in 1889 and the last beachside
cooperative of its kind in the United States) returns with their
catch of the day and local chefs congregate to pick the freshest
seafood for their establishments. Here you'll also find harbor cruises
departing from the Fun Zone, a local institution since its construction
in 1936. At this popular amusement center, you can ride the ferris
wheel and merry-go-round, take a ride in the bumper cars and play
arcade games. Completely restored, the Balboa Pavilion was built
in 1906 and is Newport Beach’s most famous landmark. Here you can
embark on a sightseeing boat tour of the harbor, or head out to
sea for a day of sportfishing. You can also catch regular departures
leaving from the pavilion to Santa Catalina Island, only 26 miles
off shore. While near the harbor, be sure to visit the Newport Harbor
Nautical Museum. Contemporary-art lovers will love the Newport Harbor
Art Museum's collection of California post-World War II art.
Be sure to catch a ferryboat to Balboa Island. Best seen on foot,
this picturesque island is home to more than 70 gift shops, galleries
and restaurants. Stroll down the North Bay front walkway to get
a better view of the stately yachts moored at the docks or around
the island to view the wonderful architectural mix of Cape Cod and
beautiful modern homes. With its tight little streets and charming
cottages, Balboa Island offers the flavor of an earlier California.
